Rain Shadow

The following image demonstrates just how much of a rain shadow from Mt. Lofty Echunga is in.

Control the animation on the South / Eastern rain shadow "HERE"

The picture is 7 radar images taken in sequence at 10 minutes apart, showing just over 1 hour of rainfall. The colours represent rainfall intensity. (refer to the legend at the bottom of the image) Where there is no colour, or just "Brown" this indicates no current precipitation. Take notice of the highlighted white circle in the middle of the image, the centre of this circle is where Echunga is located and as the weather moves in from the northwest (the direction of the rain shadow), the lack of rain in the circle is clearly visible! As most of our initial frontal rain comes from the northwest, this is just one reason why Echunga receives less annual rainfall than its near neighbours.
