Storms and Wind - 2nd to 7th July 2007 Page 2

Previous Page

The 5th

It did end up raining overnight of the 4th to 5th after the "big collapse" as described on the previous page. Falls were not outstanding and ranged from 5 to 18mm in the central districts. I recorded 14mm to 9am and Meadows Town 15mm. The gap on this day at least had closed between Meadows and myself. The 5th was much calmer and drier, but late afternoon/evening a line of heavily orographic influenced showers moved over.

As can be seen in the snippet from the daily rain map to 9am the next day (6th) the quantity recorded pretty much matches the hills and topography. I recorded 8.5mm from this overnight stream and Meadows Township 10mm.

The highlight of the week was still to come.

The 6th

Yet another front/trough line was approaching. It arrived with a bang - literally! Lightning and heavy rumbles of thunder accompanied the line as it moved up over the Fleurieu Peninsula. The radar image to the right shows the intensity of the line.

Small hail was also seen with torrential rain and delivered to my location the best rain yet. See graph below that corresponds with the radar image.

I was in Coromandel Valley when the line slammed through. A few pics showing the rain intensity can be seen in THIS GALLERY.

Many more intense "coldie cells" followed up from this line delivering torrential rains and small hail. They were moving at such a pace that rain totals accumulated slowly. But there were lots of these cells, even down my way AND in a south westerly stream! A rare event indeed for me to get any rain at all in a SW stream. Again rain totals were heavily influenced by orographics, but this time I did quite well from the heavy daytime fall and regular overnight showers. By the morning of the 7th I had 20.5mm. The ground is now well and truly sodden! I also finally beat Meadows township who recorded 15mm.

The first 7 days of July has netted me 67.5mm. 72mm in Meadows town. Bridgewater in the higher ranges had done very very well with 101mm for the week! Highlights the effect of the hills on these particular systems. The weekly rainfall bulletin is rather impressive for most of the state as can be seen below.

The 7th

Just about done with but not quite the streams turned deep south on the morning of the 7th. A bitterly cold day making just 8.7 at my location but spending most of the day around the 6 degree mark.

Cold regular and sometimes heavy showers moved through all day adding a further 10mm by 6pm to my location. The rain extended to the mallee and all the way to the mid north in the cold air. I even had a very light smattering of small hail in one shower!

The satellite image to the right shows the shower "cells" moving up from the south. Almost true coldie cells the cloud structure included glaciated tops giving an indication of the air temperature.

That's about it for this system(s). A great blast of winter in the good old fashioned way.
Not overly photogenic, but some pics including the Coulta Tornado damage can be seen in THIS GALLERY.
