The third rain band

The rain band finally began to clear and most southern Hills areas had goptten between 15 and 20mm with 15.5mm here at my location. Still though the city had missed any decent falls. But yet ANOTHER band was approaching. It had already delivered some serious falls on the west coast and deserves a viewing of a full radar image.

It was intense! Warooka on Yorkes peninsula just on the edge of that amazing southern band still copped 83mm. You have to wonder just how much fell in the thick of things!! But its Parawa that takes the cake where by 9am on Saturday 105mm had fallen including an amazing 36.8mm in less tha 30 minutes. In my spot the rain band fizzled as it moved over and delivered just a few mm. Very very frustrating. Yet again compared to my near neighbours we have been a rainfall hole.

Overnight in Whyalla the town was flooded keeping SES and CFS crews busy. One Whyalla resident had recorded over 112mm from the system in total to Saturday morning. The mid north also copped a further with falls in excess of 50mm not uncommon bringing their system totals to saturday close to or just over the 100mm mark. The SE districts also approached 100mm with 77mm at Mundulla (to 7:30am) and similar falls in surrounding locales.

But not everybody was so lucky. just 23mm at my spot with less than 27mm from the system to 9am. Have I mentioned "rainfall hole" yet? Check out the state daily rain report below!!! Some truly outstanding falls. The stand out fall is Hawker in the Flinders Ranges with 125mm!! Amazing.

The Front and Low

Next on the agenda was a front (see synoptic grab to the right). It arrived with little fuss but did develop a strong and very narrow line of heavy rain cells. On hitting east of the ranges this strengthened and at one point stretched all the way from Burra to Salt creek. Extremely heavy but quickly over falls were reported from Murray Bridge where local streets quickly flooded over. But duration was short so no damage reported. At my location the first line delievered nothing more than a thick fog which rolled across the surface of the ground in unusual "streamers". Kuitpo,however, less than 10km from my spot, scored a quickfire 3mm such was the transient nature of the rain cells. Moisture was thick in the NW stream following the front but could not penetrate the

frontal range so while Kuitpo continued to pile up totals, we were in sunshine such was the strength of the rain shadow. Another line of heavy cells associated with the front were on the way. Some good heavy drops were to be had on the western slopes of the ranges with Mt Lofty recording 16mm by the time all had passed. But yet again the presence of the strong rain shadow prevented rain from making it to my spot with any intensity, in fact blue sky was more often than not present. Just 3.5mm fell here in the end while Kuitpo got 11mm. Winds were gusting quite solidly with the passage of the low hot on the tail of the front. In the evening the showers began to pick up again along with the winds. Temperatures plummeted to 11 degrees and the evening took on a distinctly winter feel. Drizzle with the occasional moderate shower continued on and off for most of the night all along the western edge of the ranges. Morning and 17mm was in my gauge. In such an orographically influenced moisture stream its not surprising that Mt Lofty recorded the highest fall (locally) of 37mm. Meanwhile up north the heavy rains under the monsoonal low continued and more falls of 70+mm were to be seen. Notably Canopus with 72mm. What an amazing system. Described by the BOM as a one in 50 year rain event, not for the totals themselves, but the amazingly widespread nature of the extreme rainfall. An interesting local record was set on the Sunday when under the influence of the much colder southerly stream we only made a daytime temp max of 14.4 degrees. This was (to this date) the coldest January max yet recorded at this location. The previous was 15 degrees on the 1st Jan 2003.
