Low Barometer 22nd October 2002

Yet another windy change Quite a fierce day of winds again. Maximum gust of 116.4km/h with sustained gusts above 50-60km/h for a number of hours. What is clear in the image below is the rapid drop of barometric pressure (lowest 995.45 hpa) together with the strong winds heralding the approach of the change which when arriving bought a rapid drop in winds, rapid rise in humidity and a rise in the barometric pressure. Not much rain however and another day of raised dust.

Radar image of the Squall Line

The day started foggy, with surface winds from the south, but upper air movements associated with a deepening low from the northwest. After a morning and mid afternoon of gentle but persistent rains, the fog lifted, the rain stopped and the sun came out. Immediately the temp rose and the humidity stayed at a high 97% even though the fog had cleared. Large cells started to rapidly build over Mt Lofty and quickly formed into Towering CB's with the first rain falling over Hahndorf and surrounds. The next 10 minutes saw a very impressive squall line form (see radar image below) and move in from the NW.

The BOM also had noticed the approach
