Rain
and Low baro 23rd to 24th August 2003.

A low pressure system bought excellent
rains statewide with especially the mallee areas receiving decent falls,
many close to the inch mark. Extremely low barometric pressures were
also recorded, with areas south of us dropping below the 990 mark! I
recorded 990.58 hPa and just over 40mm from the system.

Persistent
drizzle 16th Sept 2003

A S/westerly moisture stream from a bight
high bought drizle and rain to a narrow band in the southern ranges.
This weather persisted for a number of days bringing significant totals
of close to 3 inches from some areas, most notable the Cherry Gardens/Longwood
district. In Cherry gardens there was water everywhere, seeping out
the hilltops, running down the road. It was completely sodden. Blackwood
and Coro Valley were much the same. Some of the drizzle was substantial
enough to call rain, big drops and loud on the roof!
The Clarendon Weir ominously close to the top on the morning of the
16th by 5:30 was flowing nicely. Not a flooding roar, but a steady and
good flow. Looked like it had been at it most of the day. That is not
so common these days. Even more uncommon was that it was overflowing
continuously for more than 3 days from this time! The sturt river had
also overflowed at wynns ford all day in Coro Valley.

Lightning pics 20th Sept 2003

First Spring Storm:Expected by some, but
certainly not forecast was thunderstorms from a northern band of mid
level moisture. The day started off sunny and clear, but by 5:00pm rain
had started with some heavy but small showers in places. Totals around
1.5 -2mm were common. The rumbles started soon after - I caught my first
ever lightning shots from Geranium in the Mallee. Check out the pics

Wind
spike 22nd Sept 2003

An approaching dry front bought strong winds
that disappeared as fast as they came. The barometric pressure dropped
quite low to bottom out at 997.10 hPa. As soon as the trough had passed
and the the baro rose, the winds died as can be seen in the image below.

A warm sunny day with a top of 31.6 degrees suddenly
changed with the arrival of a SE wind change. The temperature dropped
8 degrees in just 1 hour and more than 20 degrees in a little over 5
hours. A thick fog also rolled in reducing visibility to under
100 metres and completing the change from hot and dry to cold and wet!

A forecast that changed every 4 hours made
life for the BOM difficult. The possibility of a light show from big
storms diminished as the system approached, but local heavy falls were
still a good possibility. Rain it certainly did! See the reports and
