First decent Rain 29-03-04

TOP OF PAGE
Finally a decent rain gives some relieif from the dry weather. This has been the heaviest fall for many areas for months. I recorded 28.5 from the event and like many other rain events this one was totally unexpected!

Dry April 2004

TOP OF PAGE
Another month of dry and dusty conditions throughout the whole of southern Australia. Significantly below average rainfalls are compounded by warm temps. Thankfully strong winds were pretty much absent. A series of woeful weather patterns like the one below are becoming all to commonplace. Look at the position of the highs driving the fronts south while another moves rapidly in to take its place!!

Frost! 11th May 2004.

TOP OF PAGE
Extensive Frosts. The morning of the 11th saw widespread frosts in the deeper valleys. A regular visitor to my website sent me an email informing me that it was a toe freezing –3 at their house in the Kuitpo Valley! I snapped some pics that morning of what looked like a winter wonderland below me with snow white frosts giving the valleys a magical appearance. While 50 metres lower than us froze that morning I was in a “warm” 5.8 degrees!

That's frost down there!

Localised heavy falls 16th to 18th May 2004

TOP OF PAGE
For some this system was the season break. It was mostly confined to the northern and frontal ranges on the 16th with not enough to push over to the very dry SE corner, especially Strathalbyn.

The 18th saw even more heavy falls in the same locations as previously. This time though the rainshadow effect was one of the strongest I have EVER seen and despite more than 80mm in one location and well over an inch in many others the effect was so strong that the SE corner AGAIN missed out and received only 0.2mm.

Drought?

TOP OF PAGE
2002 was bad enough, but for the SE ranges 2004 is even worse. To the end of May Meadows is more than 100mm BELOW average and 25mm less than at the same time in 2002. Could it be yet another drought year?

Windy and wet month 30-06-04

TOP OF PAGE
June has been a windy month indeed. It culminated on the 30th when a gust 87km/h roared through in the early hours of the morning. Gusts above 70km/h were common during this 5 hour period (11:30pm on the 29th to 4:30 am on the 30th) with a 1 minute average close to 40km/h. Windy indeed!
Also a better month rain wise. 175.5mm out of 21 days. However it was a month of light to moderate falls with the heaviest 24hour to 9:00am being only 22mm on the 19th. In fact over 70% of falls this year have been below 5mm with only 1.4% going over the 25mm mark.
Despite the overall rain totals the ground was far from saturated so dry was the soil profile. Year to end of June is 333.6mm. This is 47mm below average, but the beginning of june saw us 104mm below average.
