End of Dry Spell 26-10-04

TOP OF PAGE
An approaching trough and front bought an end to what was heading for the driest October on record. Would not have even made 10mm if not for this little burst at the end of the month giving 7.5mm. Preceeding the main rainband was some high based lightning and thunder from mainly altocumulous skies. A few early showers were also reported from those in the firing line, coming from skies like the following image taken overlooking Blackwood/ Coromandel Valley.

AC storms

Most areas over the ranges had between 5 and 8mm with slightly lower falls on the plains.

The stats for the end of October show that it was the second lowest rainfall recorded from this location with only 16mm. 12mm fell in 1991making the record thus far. In more than 115 years of data from Meadows town, only 3 years have recorded lower totals, 1914 - 11.6mm, 1969 - 12.4mm and 1991 with only 6mm.

The final arrival of the rainband in the afternoon was quite spectacular as can be seen from this image below taken from Chandlers hill

Short sharp deluge 02-11-04

TOP OF PAGE
A front rocketing up from the SW with an accompanying cold pool of air woke us up in the morning with a short torrential downpour. Later in the day small hail was reported from Stirling and in the parts of the SE. Falls of between 3 and 9mm were recorded from various locations in the hills and plains. I also strongly suspect some small hail also fell at this location in the Bull Creek Ranges. The sudden arrival of this system is clear on the rain graph below.

The SW winds made for a cold day with a maximum temp of 12.6 degrees and a minimum of 4.3. The following mornings conditions could have been autumn such was the temp/hum and generall smell/ feel.

Heavy widespread rains 04-11-04 to 8-11-04

An approaching complex system gives good heavy rains/ hail and even a funnel to many areas. Read the full report and view the pics HERE.

plains rain 11-11-04

This year has seen good falls over the plains and western ranges. This small system did it again. While not really a notable event for this location it is interesting to just how rainfall distribution has been this year. (click here for rain map)
