  • Roxby Downs drowns.. ..in an incredible 86mm in 9 hours!!! Now thats a deluge. The deserts are having a good year in 2010.
Go HERE for their 10 minute OBS.
    >>(09-04-10)

  • Rain anyone? Or some flooding perhaps? Adelaide its wettest day in almost 3 years with 33mm, 46mm at the Airport, 34mm at my spot in the southern hills and an amazing 75mm at Crafers! More is forecast to follow later in the week.
    A small report HERE .
    >>(06-04-10

  • Patchy SA low. From almost zero to almost 100mm the weekend low dropped some incredible dumps to some and mere drizzle to others.. Kadina 91mm for the weekend along with Cleve 84mm, Geranium 63+mm, some of the best. As with lows it is either on or off. For me it streamed to within a few KM's. Just 14mm falling in mostly light drizzle over the full 3 days. But boy did some serious dumps come VERY VERY close! As is often the case the best fell all round the 4 points of the compass, anywhere but here as always.....
See some radar grabs HERE .
    >>(08-03-10

  • Central Oz deluges. INCREDIBLE rains are deluging outback and central Australia. Alice Springs over 300mm, Birdsville over 200mm including 168mm in 24 hours!!!!! And still raining. Inland Australia is under water! meanwhile Perth is suffering its driest period on record with the airport not recording rain since nov20th last year. Thats over 100 days!  Check out the sat pick of the low over central Australia. Almost a cyclone over land with 85km/h gust winds over Birdsville and torrential rain! AMAZING stuff, not seen in a century!! Sat pic HERE .
    >>(21-02-10)

  • Northern storms. Yet AGAIN a line of storms explodes over mid northern SA. And yet AGAIN the south remains fine and dry dry dry. The troughline responsible is however beautifully defined. More HERE .
    >>(21-02-10)

  • MASSIVE storm. explodes over northern ranges with flash flooding and damaging winds. Meanwhile dead calm and blue skies down my way (as always) as the summer big dry establishes itself with teeth. More HERE
    >>(02-02-10

  • East meets west in a collision of 2 systems. Ex tropical cyclone Olga remnants moving in from the east and a trough from the west collide over central South Australia. See the amazing satellite and radar animations HERE
    >>(02-02-10)

  • Storms? Where?.In classic centrals collapse, forecast storms in an unstable NE flow atmosphere that should have exploded simply failed to occur. One or 2 weak cells propogated, yes yet again, north. As always absolutely nothing but uncomfortable humidity down south as we continue to get drier and drier.
A few pics of the Woodside cell HERE HERE HERE
    >>(02-02-10)

  • Centrals force field ..... is in action again driving what should have been an impressive storm line up, you guessed it - north! Still one or 2 flashes about and some dribbly rain and a beautiful pink/red sunset. Plus a great diversion from "groundhog day" conditions.
Sunset pic of our hillside glowing red HERE
    >>(27-01-10)

  • FIRE! ..... A grass and woodland fire jumps into action near Meadows on the 25th Jan. Under control by evening, but a potent reminder of the season. See some pics from the links below -

  • Interesting rainfall stat ..... While we wallow in severe weather boredom I dug up this little rainfall stat from 2009!

  • Heatwave breaks and it rains! ..... Well it rained well for some. Good falls over most areas but it can be considered a flop for the SE ranges again. At least its cool!
    Read more from HERE
    >>(09-01-10)

  • and the HEAT rolls on. ..... In the city 4th Jan made 31.3, 5th-32, 6th-33.6, and 7th-35.1, 41 on the 8th, 41 today (9th) and 43 forecast for the next 2 days.
For my spot in the SE ranges it reads as 7th- 33.5, 8th- 35.2, and 9th (today)- 36.7
Oh yeah this is a heatwave - AGAIN!
    >>(09-01-10)

  • 2009 Meadows summary HEAT .....dominates 2009 in the Meadows hills. It was my hottest year I have recorded (av max) by a tiny 0.01 degrees. It had my hottest ever recorded day of 40.8. Plus 40 degrees usually only comes along once every 5-6 years. 2009 also recorded the number of days with a max above 30 more than any previous year I have recorded.
    See the SUMMARY HERE.
    >>(09-01-10)

  • WHAT? Another heatwave? You have got to be joking, c'mon mother nature give us a break. Enough is enough. So what will this one bring? Watch this space.
    >>(05-01-10)

  • HAPPY NEW YEAR! Here we go again, another year. What will it bring? No-one knows, but it started with some decent stormy action. Where? Up north and east of course. Lameroo smashed by 140km wind gusts and some serious rain rates. A monster of a storm explodes on new years day over no mans land in Riverland SA..
    See some radar grabs HERE
    >>(05-01-10

  • Nov Heatwave! Wrapup and BOM download HERE
    >>(05-01-10)

  • RAINFALL RECORD! Well for me anyways! Sat 28th saw convergence around a southern low dump the most significant rain in terms of intensity in a decade at my spot and the highest 24 hr fall in almost 2 years! over 70mm in under a week! PLUS marble sized hail, howling gales and localised flooding. Pretty good effort for November. See the rain rate graph.
HERE, and small radar loop HERE
    >>(01-12-09)

  • Inland low deluges central Australia rotation tightly. Following a rainband that delivered 100+mm to some spots last week, this one is wetting the deserts again. Storms also accompanying the rainband push to the central districts east of the ranges with a nice roll cloud/guster near Murray Bridge/Strathalbyn. A few late evening pics
    HERE, HERE and HERE
    >>(25-11-09)

  • Nice little storm to end the nasty record breaking hottest on record November day of 43 degrees int he city and 36 degrees at my spot. Shocker of a day with fires all over the place, some serious, none welcome. Evening storms with dry strikes started a few fires around the ag areas. A few pics of the stormy stuff as it waffled through. Pics HERE , HERE, HERE, HERE and HERE
    >>(20-11-09)

  • Will another Nov record be smashed? Forecast for the 19th for Adelaide is an incredible 43 degrees! If this is reached it will set a new november record for Kent Town/West terrace breaking the old 42.7 set in 1962! The records are tumbling in these extraordinary times. Relief is on the way, with friday the 20th forecast to be back below 30. It may even rain!
The sky turned red/orange and blue again in an omen for the morrow. The oven is BACK!.
    Pic HERE
    >>(18-11-09)

  • Catastrophic fire danger In a first for Australia under the new fire classification system SA's northern regions are declared as under Catastrophic risk for the 18th and 19th. The mainsteam press are having a field day! Aweful conditions with searing heat to the mid 40's and strong winds.
    >>(18-11-09)

  • And thus ends round one..... even if the duration is slight. Just one day. One day before it comes back. Novemeber is running a mindblowing 4.3 degrees ABOVE FEBRUARY'S average max!! Bloody hell!
The sky turned red tonight, the oven is idling for the minute.
    Pics HERE and HERE
    >>(15-11-09)

  • NEW RECORD!! Officially our first EVER November heatwave since records began. By the looks the old nov consecutive days above 35 record will be SMASHED off the planet! November max temp average currently stands at an incredible 32.2 degrees, 7.2 degrees above the long term average!! Sadly relief still some way off.
    >>(12-11-09)

  • HEATWAVE ROLLS ON! Knuckle down people, its gonna be hot hot hot. Could this smash all records? Could it be the 3rd consecutive summer that we cook in ridiculous runs of temps that are supposed to be one in a thousdand year events?
    This is BEYOND a joke!
    >>(08-11-09)

  • HEATWAVE! The forecast for the next week from the 4th nov is amazing. Its so very much like feb that all you can say is "here's summer!" The run as of the 4th reads like this
Saturday Fine. Sunny. Min 15 Max 33
Sunday Fine. Mostly sunny. Min 20 Max 33
Monday Dry. Mostly sunny. Min 21 Max 35
Tuesday Dry. Mostly sunny. Min 21 Max 37
Wednesday Dry. Mostly sunny. Min 22 Max 37

And its likely it will continue! YUCK!

    >>(04-11-09)

  • moons and rings A nice ring around the moon in the hot evening conditions. A few pics here here and here
    >>(30-10-09)

  • Climate "flip!" Snap! And in comes the heat. An incredible 6 degree average max temp rise in 14 days, potentially 6 consecutive days above 30 deg for the city. LOOK OUT! here comes summer!! What happened to spring? Meanwhile massive storms explode in Western Victoria while SA wither's to dust.
    >>(30-10-09)

  • Cold and wet in October A nice deep low south of the state drops good rainfalls to 40mm over the northern hills (as usual) and down on the southern fleurieu. No near so much down the SE ranges as the year runs down the average line only. Gales to 100km/h lash much of southern SA.
    >>(13-10-09)

  • INCOMING!!!!!!! At 10:45am Monday - Incredible storms are born on the Eyre Peninsula and heading for the centrals. Golf ball hail unofficially reported. This is as good as it gets in SA.
    >>(21-09-09) AMAZING radar grab HERE and lightning tracker HERE

  • WIND!! dry shocking gales The 11th september was a  record hot day for Adelaide with a 29 degree top. It also saw shocking dry gale force winds hammer the state. Minus 43 dewpoints in the north meant the air blowing down was super DRY. An overnight repreive but the 12th was worse with stronger more variable and just as dry winds. SHOCKING DESTRUCTIVE days.
    >>(12-09-09)

  • Storm report A small report plus full radar loop of the recent storms now online.
    >>(18-08-09) Report HERE

  • Lightning and WIND!!!! And some pretty extreme temps for August. Still 20 degrees at midnight in the southern hills which is pretty much unheard of. Winds strong enough to make in the open photography impossible, so I shot from the tripod on the front seat! Yep lightning, 8 months in the making, average show, but hell! Lightning is lightning.
    >>(16-08-09) Small gallery of pics HERE

  • HOWZATT!!!!...Finally some weather worth talking about. A VERY vigorous front SLAMS through SA leaving a trail of destruction, massive power outages,a truck blown over, lightning, hail and maybe even a cold air tornado!A new gallery of pics started, report soon.
    >>(30-06-09) View the gallery HERE

  • Storm...One or 2 nice little storms developed east of the ranges in particular on the 6th June. Bubbling convection with reported small hail in one spot. Not a lot of rain, just nice winter structure. Also spotted was a number of waterspouts in the seas off the Metropolitan coastline. (06-06-09)
    >> Storm structure pics HERE and HERE
    >> Waterspout captures here..

  • Easterly infeed...Aided by a blocking high pattern of all things an easterly moisture infeed from an eastern states upper troughline drops reasonable falls in narrow convergence streams over the eastern range front. 14mm for me and counting. Welcome WINTER!.
    >>(02-06-09)

  • Rain elsewhere... It rained, poured and bucketed even with system total falls up to 50mm and generally 25-30mm in a narrow N-S band with tropical origins. Only it did NOT fall at my spot with one of the worse displays of "rain repellance" I have seen. Yet another 2 days of barely drizzle and very low totals for me.
    >>(25-05-09)

  • Orographics at work... Yet another blocking high dominates. But a damp SW stream soaks the central ranges.
    >> Report HERE (18-05-09)

  • Where did that come from? Pinch and a punch, some rain for the frist day of the month!!! A surprise deluge gives over 30mm to Belleview Heights, 20mm plus to Strath and over an inch to Currency Creek!! Finally a well deserved drop to the SE flats and lakes district.
    >> (01-05-09)

  • Thats it for now folks... Pretty much all over except for a few dribbles here and there ......
    >> Small Report HERE (27-04-09)

  • Bloody Hell! Early Monday morning deluge drops a further 24mm bringing my total to almost 100mm and well over the 120mm mark for the higher ranges. "BEAUTY MATE"......
    >> Report started HERE (27-04-09)

  • Rain anyone? See my forecast below. Its come off!! Torrential rain, local flooding, king tides, stranded surfers, hail. Bloody Hell! I think its fair to say the season has broken as most of the state cops a pizzling. 72mm at this location and much much more further north in the high lofties. Hell of a start. Anzac day tradition is back......
    Report Soon (25-04-09)

  • Could this break the season? Keep watching and cross all your fingers. Reasonable rains are staying present on the models for the latter half of this week. No more downgrades please!!.
    (20-04-09)

  • Is that rain? What was that again? A nice few mm in a moist WSW airstream sees the highest and heaviest falls for me in over 6 weeks. But 5mm is not a season break, just a break from the ordinary. .
    MORE PLEASE! (16-04-09)

  • Poor Autumn outlooks. Latest rainfall outlooks from the BOM for autumn are pretty grim. Just 30-35% chance of exceeding average falls in central SA.
    Read more HERE (25-03-09)

  • Fine and hot. The mainstream press call it "beautiful weather". Fine warm to hot, temps rising to mid thirties again and no rainfall in the immediate future. Its anything but beautiful. See news item below as to why.

  • Cyclone. Tropical Cyclone Hamish off the Queensland coast is a category 4 storm with winds to 150mph (242km/h). An impressive looking storm from the satellites too.
    >>See a pic HERE (11-03-09)

  • RAIN!! Almost 3 months with effectively no rainfall is broken. As often the case in recent times best falls locally are north of my location with up to 36+mm in some spots. Still after 14mm here the ground is wet, the temps are cool and the wind smells like winter.
    >> PERFECT (03-03-09)

  • Dry, crispy dry. The period from September 2008 to 15th Feb 2009 is the second driest period on record for Meadows district. Only surpassed by the 1982-83 drought period.

    >> Amazing MODIS sat pic HERE
    >> (09-02-09)

  • Victorian Tragedy. The scope of the Victorian fires is outside of comprehension. Whole towns obliterated and many many lives lost to say nothing of the loss of property. Borders mean nothing and our hearts and thoughts are with everyone involved.

  • Cool Years start for 2009 An average Max temp of 24.7 and Av Min of 10.2 is 1 degree below my longer term averages giving a cool start to 2009. (This is despite a big heat burst on the 13th when we reached 36 and 42 on the plains.) Its not the coldest though, that stat goes to 2004 which was 3 degrees cooler again! The general summer climate itself thus far is some of the most boring non descript weather I have ever suffered! At least its generally cool. ;-)
    >> BRING ON WINTER! (18-01-09)

  • 2008 monthly data online Monthly data from 2008 is now online. The yearly summary is still in the pipeline and should be available soon. A hardware bug misreporting wind directions (consistently) needs to be adjusted first!

  • Abyssmal September ... Well here endeth September 2008. Pretty abyssmal month. The lowest rainfall recording for September for my spot since 1989.
Certainly not a 120 year record for the area (based on Meadows Township), but well and truly in the lowest 10 percent or decile 1. Then there is the temps. Lowest rainfall - highest temperature .... (30-09-08)

  • Update - A day to forget... Bit hard to forget though when its so well documented!! Small report on my record temperature from the 27th September now online.
    >> Read the report HERE (28-09-08)

  • A day to forget... High temps in the 30's for the plains, gale force winds and no rain to ease the pain. It was my hottest EVER september day for this location! Beating the previous record by a good 3 degrees!!!! What could be worse? Surely September the 27th will go down in the top ten of the most damaging days of 2008! A day to forget. It ended with an impressive splash of colour however.
    >> PIc #1 Pic #2 (27-09-08)

  • A few sparks... A few rumbles and bangs overnight? Apparently, but my area stuck in the usual clear spot of nothing, not even a drop of rain!! All north and all south. These distributions are not random and are very summer like in behaviour. Its spring though remember!

  • WIND! An extraordinary day of extreme winds, hail, rain and did I mention the wind?

  • Lightning! Thunder, gale force winds hail and torrential rain!! That vigorous front leads us into our 4th day of +60km/h winds, produces a few sparks, some very heavy rain, buckets of small hail and about 10mm in total over the weekend. 7mm Saturday(13th) night and 3mm to Monday (15th) morning. Its not photogenic with most lightning cloud embedded and rain wrapped. However, my rather bad but....
    >> ..ubiqitous hail pic here (15-09-08)

  • HOT! Ridiculous high temperautures ahead of a vigorous approaching front and very strong to gale force winds make for a shocker of a day! +30 in the northern areas, 28 in the City and 22 in the ranges!! Awful conditions and in such drying weather raised dust preceeds the front also. Satellite pic however is pretty amazing with a thousand km long sharp troughline amazingly visible!!
