12th April 2003 Strong Rain shadow effect

Previous Page

Please be patient for all 46 images to load - ~1.26mb..............

An approaching front saw strong north westery winds with a good rain band. What was also particularly evident in this system was the rain shadow effect of the Mt Lofty Ranges on areas that are east of the hills. Watch closely the area around Strathalbyn and the lakes. Only the strongest rains make it this far with nearly all of the precipitation falling west of this area! It is amazing to think that in the space of 15km's (Meadows to Strathalbyn) the moisture has been exhausted. Meadows recorded 10mm from this system and Strathalbyn 1mm! The highest recordings from the northern ranges were close to the 25mm mark.. See below for some animation instructions

You can control the animation speed, looping direction:(forward, forward-reverse) or advance frame by frame.

The Navigator displays distance and direction from Adelaide and can be set to zero from any point on the map.
*Thanks to the BOM for all the hard work on the code.*
